THREE JUVENILES ARRESTED AND CHARGED IN JERSEY CITY HOMICIDE

Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez has released the following information:

Three juveniles from Jersey City were recently arrested without incident by members of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and charged in connection with the murder of Judane Holmes, age 16, of Jersey City.

On Friday, January 4, 2019, at approximately 2:00 p.m., a 14-year-old male was arrested in the area of Virginia Avenue in Jersey City. He has been charged with Murder as Accomplice in violation of N.J.S. 2C:2-6 and 2C:11-3; Possession of a Weapon (Firearm) for an Unlawful Purpose in violation of N.J.S. 2C:39-4; and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (Firearm) in violation of N.J.S. 2C:39-5.

On Friday, January 4, 2019, shortly after 12:30 p.m., a 15-year-old male was arrested in the area of Sawmill Road in Alloway Township, New Jersey. He has been charged with Murder as Accomplice in violation of N.J.S. 2C:2-6 and 2C:11-3; Possession of a Weapon (Firearm) for an Unlawful Purpose in violation of N.J.S. 2C:39-4; and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (Firearm) in violation of N.J.S. 2C:39-5.

On Monday, January 7, 2019, a 16-year-old male was arrested at the Prosecutor’s Office located at 595 Newark Avenue in Jersey City. He has been charged with Murder in violation of N.J.S. 2C:11-3; Possession of a Weapon (Firearm) for an Unlawful Purpose in violation of N.J.S. 2C:39-4; and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (Firearm) in violation of N.J.S. 2C:39-5.

Prosecutor Suarez credited the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit for the investigation and arrests and the Jersey City Police Department for assisting in the investigation.

On Wednesday, December 26, 2018, at approximately 3:25 p.m., the Jersey City Police Department received a report of shots fired in the area of 209 Bidwell Avenue in Jersey City. Responding Jersey City Police Officers found Holmes at that location with apparent gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 3:35 p.m.

The Regional Medical Examiner’s Office has determined the Cause of Death to be gunshot wounds and the Manner of Death to be homicide.

The above charges are merely accusations, and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. R.P.C. 3.6(b)(6).
