POLICE –INVOLVED SHOOTING INVESTIGATED

Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez confirmed a police-involved shooting at 264 Lembeck Ave. in Jersey City. Shortly before 11 p.m. on Monday, June 20, Jersey City Police Officers were dispatched to that location on a report of a man threatening his mother with a knife.

The responding officers were confronted with an individual identified as Christopher J. Matthew, age 25, of the same Lembeck Avenue address. During the encounter, Matthew allegedly lunged at the police officers with a knife and one Jersey City Police Officer discharged his firearm striking Matthew in his extremities.

Matthew was transported to Jersey City Medical Center where he is being treated for his gunshot wound(s) and is listed in stable condition. Matthew’s mother was treated on the scene for minor injuries. Three police officers were transported to the hospital, treated and released.

Matthew has been charged with six counts of aggravated assault on the mother and police officers and related weapons offenses (knives). Bail has been set at $50,000 cash or bond.

The shooting is being investigated by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, which is standard protocol for police-involved shootings.

The above charges are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. R.P.C. 3.6(b)(6).
