POLICE –INVOLVED SHOOTING INVESTIGATED

Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez has confirmed a police-involved shooting in the parking lot of a Walmart located on Harrison Avenue in Kearny, New Jersey. Shortly after 8 a.m. on Friday, September 16, 2016, a uniformed police officer discharged his weapon, striking Ramon L. Martinez, age 43, of Newark, in an extremity. Martinez was transported to a local hospital and is currently listed in stable condition.

Martinez has been charged with Eluding, a 2nd degree crime, in violation of N.J.S. 2C:29-2(b); Receiving Stolen Property, a 3rd degree crime, in violation of N.J.S. 2C:20-7(a); and, Shoplifting in violation of N.J.S 2C:20-11(b)(2).

A second individual, Diego C. Dosreis, age 28, of Newark, was involved in the incident and has been charged with Receiving Stolen Property, a 3rd degree crime, in violation of N.J.S. 2C:20-7(a).

The uniformed police officer involved with the shooting was transported to a local hospital for observation and released.

The shooting is being investigated by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, which is standard protocol for police-involved shootings. The above charges are merely accusations, and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. R.P.C.3.6(b)(6).
