MAN IN OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING HAS BEEN CHARGED

Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez has released the following information:

On Monday, December 4, 2017, shortly after 4:10 p.m., Jersey City Police Officers were dispatched to an outpatient psychiatric facility located at 9 Nunda Avenue in Jersey City on a report of a male who was threatening workers. Upon arrival, two responding officers observed a male with a large shard of glass threatening to injure himself and others.

The two officers engaged the actor inside the building and attempted to de-escalate the situation. An attempt to disarm the actor with pepper spray was unsuccessful and ultimately, one Police Officer discharged his service weapon. The actor, who was struck in the torso, was treated at the scene and then transported by Emergency Medical Services to Jersey City Medical Center where he is being treated for his injuries.

The two officers who initially responded to the scene were also taken to the hospital by EMS for evaluation and treatment.

The actor was identified as Florencio Figueroa, age 41, of Jersey City. Detectives from the Office of the Hudson County Prosecutor have charged Figueroa with Aggravated Assault with a deadly weapon in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1, a third-degree crime; Terroristic Threats in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-3, a third-degree crime; Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C39-4, a third-degree crime; and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5, a fourth-degree crime.

Pursuant to Attorney General guidelines, the Office of the Hudson County Prosecutor has taken over the investigation from the Jersey City Police Department and the Prosecutor’s Internal Affairs Unit is in the early stages of the investigation.

The above charges are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. R.P.C.3.6(b)(6).
