MAN CHARGED AFTER PROVIDING FALSE INFORMATION TO INSURANCE COMPANY TO RECEIVE COMPENSATION FOR DAMAGED VEHICLE

Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez has released the following information:

On Wednesday, December 14, 2022, members of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Insurance Fraud Unit arrested a 30-year-old man on charges relating to falsified information he provided to an auto insurance company to receive compensation for a damaged vehicle.

Shingai Marandure, of New Brunswick, is charged with one count of Insurance Fraud in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:21-4.6c, a crime of the second degree. He was arrested at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Jersey City and released on a summons pending his first court appearance.

The investigation determined Marandure learned his uninsured 2019 BMW 430 was involved in a hit-and-run collision and opened a Progressive auto insurance policy on Thursday, April 28, 2022. Immediately after obtaining the policy, Marandure notified police of the damage to his vehicle and then filed a claim with Progressive the following day. Investigators later determined the vehicle was damaged on Thursday, April 21, 2022. Prosecutor Suarez credited the Insurance Fraud Unit with the investigation and arrest. The above charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. R.P.C.3.6(b)(6).
