JURY FINDS JERSEY CITY MAN GUILTY OF RECKLESS MANSLAUGHTER

Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez has released the following information:

On Tuesday, July 23, 2019, Charles Lowy, age 68, of Jersey City, was found guilty by a Hudson County jury of Reckless Manslaughter involving the death of Anthony Bello, age 77, of Jersey City. The jury deliberated for approximately one hour before returning a guilty verdict on the Reckless Manslaughter charge.

On April 15, 2018, the Jersey City Police Department received a report of an aggravated assault in Pershing Field. Responding officers found an unresponsive male victim who was bleeding from a wound to his torso. The man was later identified as Anthony Bello. He was transported by Emergency Medical Services to Jersey City Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at approximately 9:05 a.m.

The investigation and trial revealed that Bello was involved in an altercation in the park with the defendant, who subsequently walked away from the scene.

The Honorable Sheila Venable, J.S.C. presided over the trial. Judge Venable is scheduled to sentence the defendant on October 4, 2019. The defendant faces 5 to 10 years for Reckless Manslaughter and will have to serve 85 percent of any sentence imposed without the possibility of parole.
