On August 25, 2017, detectives from the Special Victims Unit of the Office of the Hudson County Prosecutor arrested Marquis Gilchrist, age 31, of Jersey City, in connection with the aggravated sexual assault which occurred inside a McGinley Square apartment on Fairmount Avenue on August 13, 2017.

Gilchrist has been charged with two counts of Aggravated Sexual Assault in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:14-2, a first-degree crime; two counts of Burglary in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:18-2, a second-degree crime; Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose (Knife) in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4, a third-degree crime; Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (Knife) in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5, a fourth-degree crime; and making Terroristic Threats in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-3, a third-degree crime.

Gilchrist made his first appearance on these charges in Criminal Justice Reform Court in the Hudson County Administration Building in Jersey City on Saturday, August 26, 2017, where the Prosecutor’s Office moved for pretrial detention of the defendant. A detention hearing has been scheduled for Wednesday, August 30, 2017.

On August 13, 2017, Jersey City Police Officers and Detectives from the Prosecutor’s SVU responded to a report of a home invasion and sexual assault on Fairmount Avenue in Jersey City. A 22-year-old victim reported that she was sexually assaulted at knifepoint by an unknown male who broke into her apartment.

Prosecutor Suarez credited the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit for the investigation and subsequent arrest.

Gilchrist, who was on Parole, was also arrested on August 23, 2017, by Parole Board Officers for violating Parole and was subsequently charged with Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:35-10, a third-degree crime.

The above charges are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. R.P.C.3.6(b)(6).
