HUDSON COUNTY JURY CONVICTS JERSEY CITY MAN IN 2016 MURDER  

On Friday, March 15, 2019, David Cooper, age 28, of Jersey City, was convicted by a Hudson County Jury on all counts relating to the murder of a Jersey City man that occurred on Forrest Avenue in Jersey City in 2016. The jury deliberated for approximately 90 minutes prior to finding the defendant guilty.

During the course of the trial the State presented evidence and witnesses establishing that on September 19, 2016, Cooper fired a 9mm bullet into the back of the neck of 20-year-old Ahmin Colclough resulting in his death.

Cooper was convicted of Murder contrary to the provisions of N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (Firearm) contrary to N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5, and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose (Firearm) contrary to N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4. Murder is a first-degree crime which carries a sentence of 30 years to life in New Jersey State Prison subject to the No Early Release Act. The weapon charges are second-degree crimes, each carrying a sentence of 5 to 10 years in NJSP subject to the No Early Release Act.

The State was represented by Assistant Prosecutor Kevin Roe of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit. The Honorable Mirtha Ospina, J.S.C. presided over the matter and has currently scheduled Cooper to be sentenced on May 31, 2019.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department investigated the case.
