FIRST ASSISTANT PROSECUTOR NAMED
Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez named Wayne Mello, as her new First Assistant
Prosecutor today. Mello was born in Jersey City and is a graduate of St. Peter’s College and
Rutgers School of Law (Newark). He served as an Infantry First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army,
including a tour of duty in Vietnam. Admitted to the New Jersey Bar in 1977, he has worked at
both the Morris and Bergen County Prosecutors’ Offices. He has 23 years of experience
as a prosecutor, most recently as the Chief Homicide Assistant Prosecutor for the Bergen County
Prosecutor’s Office.

Prosecutor Suarez said, “Wayne is a top-notch career prosecutor, who will bring a wealth of
experience and insight to our Office. He has tried a number of complex and high-profile criminal
cases and has a reputation for being a meticulous and passionate advocate. We are excited to have
him on-board and he is eager to begin his new post.”

Mello will be sworn in a small private ceremony on January 6th, followed by a public ceremony on a
later date to be determined.
