SUSPECT WANTED IN CONNECTION WITH FATAL SHOOTING OF JERSEY CITY WOMAN ARRESTED BY HOMICIDE UNIT DETECTIVES

Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez has released the following information:

A Jersey City man wanted in connection with the death of 30-year-old Felicia Stewart, who was fatally shot on Grant Avenue off of Martin Luther King Drive in Jersey City on July 27, 2021 has been arrested by members of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit.

On Saturday, July 31, 2021, at approximately 11:30 a.m., Mark Stewart, age 26, of Jersey City was arrested after surrendering himself to Homicide Unit detectives at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Jersey City. He was arrested without incident and will be housed at the Hudson County Correctional Facility in Kearny pending his first appearance.

Stewart was charged with Aggravated Manslaughter in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:11-4A(1), a crime of the first degree; Possession of a Weapon (firearm) for an Unlawful Purpose in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4A(1), a second-degree crime; and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (firearm) in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5B(1), a second-degree crime.

 

On Tuesday, July 27, 2021, just prior to 1:00 a.m., members of the Jersey City Police Department responded to a report of shots fired in the area of Grant Avenue and Martin Luther King Drive in Jersey City. Responding officers found a 30-year-old female victim, later identified as Felicia Stewart, who had sustained gunshot wound(s) to her back and was transported to the Jersey City Medical Center where she was pronounced deceased at 2:02 a.m. The Regional Medical Examiner determined the cause of death to be gunshot wound(s) to the abdomen and the manner of death to be homicide. There is no known familial relationship between the victim and the suspect.

Prosecutor Suarez credited the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit for the investigation and arrest and the Jersey City Police Department for their assistance in the investigation.

The above charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. R.P.C.3.6(b)(6).
