Driver in December West New York Hit and Run Arrested


DRIVER IN WEST NEW YORK HIT AND RUN THAT SERIOUSLY INJURED 56-YEAR-OLD MAN ARRESTED

Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez has released the following information:

The driver in a December 2019 hit and run in West New York that seriously injured a 56-year-old New York City man has been arrested and charged by detectives with the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Regional Collision Investigation Unit.

Temilayo Okeowo, 44, of West New York, has been charged with Knowingly Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1.1, a crime of the third-degree.  Okeowo turned herself in to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office with her attorney Friday morning just before 9 a.m.

On Sunday, December 1, 2019, at approximately 4:40 p.m., the West New York Police Department responded to the area of 66th Street and Boulevard East on a report of an unconscious man on the ground at that location. Upon arrival, West New York Police Officers found that a man had been struck by a vehicle that left the scene of the collision.

The man has been identified as a 56-year-old from New York City. He was transported by Emergency Medical Services to Jersey City Medical Center where he was treated for life-threatening injuries.   The victim is still recovering from injuries sustained during the incident.

The initial investigation by the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit and the West New York Police Department determined that the man was a pedestrian and that he was struck while crossing 66th Street at the intersection of Boulevard East.

Prosecutor Suarez credited the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Regional Collision Investigation Unit and the West New York Department for the investigation and arrest.

The above charge(s) are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. R.P.C.3.6(b)(6).
