BAYONNE MAN CHARGED AFTER OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING INCIDENT

Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez has released the following information:

On Wednesday, September 12, 2018, at approximately 7:20 p.m., Bayonne Police Officers were dispatched to 129 Avenue F in Bayonne on a report of an Emotionally Disturbed Person.

Upon arrival, two officers encountered a male who was verbally abusive and who displayed menacing behavior toward the officers. The male, later identified as Ryan Schultheis, age 25, of Bayonne, then displayed what appeared to be a firearm and pointed it at the officers. One of the officers then discharged his service weapon. No one was hit and no injuries were sustained. It was later determined that the weapon displayed by Schultheis was an imitation firearm.

Schultheis was transported by Emergency Medical Services to the Jersey City Medical Center for evaluation. The two officers who initially responded to the scene were also transported to the hospital for evaluation.

Schultheis has been charged with two counts of Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer in violation of N.J.S. 2C:12-1b, a third-degree crime, and one count of Possession of an Imitation Firearm in violation of N.J.S. 2C:39-4, a fourth-degree crime.

Pursuant to Attorney General guidelines, the Office of the Hudson County Prosecutor has taken over the investigation from the Bayonne Police Department and the Prosecutor’s Internal Affairs Unit is in the early stages of the investigation.

The above charges are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. R.P.C.3.6(b)(6).
