WOMAN STABBED TO DEATH IN UNION CITY

Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez has released the following information:

On March 26, 2018, at approximately 5:25 a.m., the Union City Police Department received a report of a person stabbed at 3612 New York Avenue. Upon arrival, responding Union City Police Officers encountered a male with a knife inside the building. The officers were able to secure the knife and detain the man.

The man, who has since been identified as Kevin Cortes, age 26, of Union City, was subsequently transported to Palisades Medical Center for evaluation.

The officers then located a female victim on the third floor of the residence with multiple wounds to her upper body. The victim has been identified as Giselle Bravo, age 20, of Queens, NY.

Bravo was administered lifesaving aid at the scene and was then transported by Emergency Medical Services to the Jersey City Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at approximately 6:40 a.m. The cause and manner of death are pending an investigation by the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

Cortes has been charged by members of the Prosecutor’s Homicide Unit with Murder in violation of N.J.S. 2C:11-3, a first-degree crime; Possession of a Weapon (Knife) for an Unlawful Purpose in violation of N.J.S. 2C:39-4, a third-degree crime; and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (Knife) in violation of N.J.S. 2C:39-5, a fourth-degree crime.

Prosecutor Suarez credited the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Union City Police Department for assisting in the investigation.

The Prosecutor’s Homicide Unit continues to actively investigate the case with assistance from the Union City Police Department. The above charges are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. R.P.C.3.6(b)(6).
