TWO MEN ARRESTED AND CHARGED IN 2017 JERSEY CITY HOMICIDE

Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez has released the following information:

On Friday, October 5, 2018, members of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit arrested Oriental Hamlet, age 19, of Jersey City, and Bijan Cooper, age 20, of Jersey City in connection with the June 14, 2017, murder of Alshaakir Talmadge. The suspects were arrested at the Office of the Hudson County Prosecutor in Jersey City without incident.

Hamlet and Cooper have been charged with Murder in violation of N.J.S. 2C:11-3, Conspiracy to Commit Murder in violation of N.J.S. 2C:5-2 and N.J.S. 2C:11-3, Possession of a Weapon (Firearm) for an Unlawful Purpose in violation of N.J.S. 2C:39-4, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (Firearm) in violation of N.J.S. 2C:39-5. Cooper has also been charged with False Report to Law Enforcement in violation of N.J.S. 2C:28-4b(1).

Hamlet and Cooper were processed and transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility in Kearny to await their first appearance.

Prosecutor Suarez credited the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit for the investigation and arrest with the assistance of the Jersey City Police Department.

On June 14, 2017, at approximately 10:10 p.m., Jersey City Police Officers responded to the area of Martin Luther King Drive and Union Street on a report of a male gunshot victim. Upon arrival, the responding Police Officers found Talmadge, age 20, of Jersey City, lying on the sidewalk across from 131 Union Street near Martin Luther King Drive.

Talmadge, who suffered apparent gunshot wounds to the upper body during the incident, was unresponsive and was immediately treated at the scene by Emergency Medical Services. He was transported to Jersey City Medical Center by EMS where he was pronounced dead at approximately 11:40 p.m. The Regional Medical Examiner’s Office has found the Cause of death to be multiple gunshot wounds and the Manner of death to be homicide.

The above charges are merely accusations, and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. R.P.C.3.6(b)(6).
