THREE STABBED IN NORTH BERGEN; MAN FATALLY SHOT BY RESPONDING POLICE OFFICERS

Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez has released the following information:

On Monday, August 7, 2017, at approximately 3:20 a.m., North Bergen Police Officers were dispatched to 1601 Union Turnpike in North Bergen on a report of a fight in progress. Upon arrival, one responding Officer observed a female victim with multiple stab wounds and began to render medical aid. The victim directed two additional responding Police Officers to the rear of the residence where a second female victim and a male suspect were located.

The two Officers engaged the actor on the back porch of the residence and attempted to deescalate the situation and render aid to the second victim. An attempt to disarm the actor with pepper spray was unsuccessful and ultimately, both Police Officers discharged their service weapon. The actor, who was struck in the torso, was treated at the scene and then transported by Emergency Medical Services to Jersey City Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The deceased was a 45-year-old male whose last known residence was in Union City. His identity is being withheld pending notification of his next of kin.

The two female victims, a 31-year-old from North Bergen and a 34-year-old from Guttenberg, were transported by EMS to Jersey City Medical Center. They are reported to be in stable condition.

One additional stabbing victim from this incident, a 33-year-old man from Union City, was located by police. He was transported to Jersey City Medical Center by EMS, evaluated and released.

The two Police Officers who were involved with the shooting were taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Pursuant to Attorney General guidelines, the Office of the Hudson County Prosecutor has taken over the investigation from the North Bergen Police Department and the Prosecutor’s Internal Affairs Unit is in the early stages of the investigation.
