SUSPECT WANTED IN SEXUAL ASSAULT ARRESTED IN UNION CITY

Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez has released the following information:

On January 13, 2018, shortly after 11:30 p.m., members of the Union City Police Department arrested Luis Bescome, age 31, of East Elmhurst, New York, in the area of 39th Street in Union City. Bescome was wanted in connection with an alleged Sexual Assault of a 10-year-old female victim outside an apartment building in Union City that occurred on January 12, 2018.

Bescome has been charged with Sexual Assault in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:14-2, a second-degree crime; Endangering the Welfare of a Child in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:24-4, a third-degree crime; Escape in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C: 29-5, a third-degree crime; Possession of Controlled Dangerous Substance (Marijuana) in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:35-10; Defiant Trespassing in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:18-3; and Obstructing the Administration of Law or Other Governmental Function in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:29-1.

On January 12, 2018, Union City Police Department detectives contacted the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Special Victims Unit regarding an alleged sexual assault of a 10-year-old female victim by an unidentified male on the steps of her apartment building.

The victim was subsequently able to get away and alert an adult member of her household who immediately contacted the UCPD.

The initial investigation led to a suspect being identified as Bescome who was subsequently located at a nearby shelter. He was transported to a Hudson County Prosecutor facility in Jersey City. A short time after arriving at the facility, Bescome fled the area to an unknown location. He was apprehended within 24 hours by law enforcement officers.

Prosecutor Suarez credited the Union City Police Department for their assistance in apprehending this individual. Suarez also credited the NJ State Police, the Maywood Police Department K-9 Unit, the Jersey City Police Department and the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance.

The above charges are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. R.P.C.3.6(b)(6).
