SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT INVESTIGATES SEXUAL ASSAULT IN THE AREA OF WESTSIDE AVENUE AND UNION STREET IN JERSEY CITY

Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez has released the following information:

On Monday, July 1, 2019, shortly after 2:40 a.m., Jersey City Police Officers responded to a report of sexual assault in the area of Westside Avenue and Union Street in Jersey City. Responding police officers found a woman in that area who alleged that she was a victim of a sexual assault. The woman was transported by Emergency Medical Services to Jersey City Medical Center for medical attention.

The initial investigation by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit and the Jersey City Police Department revealed that the woman, a 27-year-old from Jersey City, had contact with a man on Westside Avenue who offered to give her a ride home. After following him on foot to an unknown area, the man allegedly used a knife to hold her and sexually assault her.

This was the second sexual assault reported on July 1, 2019, involving a weapon identified as a knife. Detectives are actively investigating both cases.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit is actively investigating this case with assistance from the Jersey City Police Department. No arrests have been made at this time. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Office of the Hudson County Prosecutor at 201-915-1234 or to leave an anonymous tip at: http://www.hudsoncountyprosecutorsofficenj.org/homicide-tip/.
