SECOND MAN ARRESTED IN NORTH CAROLINA FOR HIS ROLE IN JERSEY CITY HOMICIDE

Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez has released the following information:

On Tuesday, March 22, 2022, Damean Bates, 33, of West Orange, was arrested in Raleigh, North Carolina, in connection with the fatal shooting of Ishamell McCany on November 13, 2021 in Jersey City. Bates was arrested at approximately 2:05 p.m by members of the United States Marshals Service Eastern District of North Carolina Regional Fugitive Task Force after members of the United States Marshals Service New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force learned of Bates’ location.

Bates is charged with Attempted Murder in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:5-1 and N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5b, and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4a. He remains in custody in North Carolina awaiting extradition to New Jersey.

On Saturday, November 13, 2021, shortly after 4:00 a.m., the Jersey City Police Department responded to the area of Grant Avenue and Martin Luther King Drive in Jersey City after hearing gunshots. Responding officers found a male victim with a gunshot wound to the torso. The victim, later identified as Ishamell McCany, 41, of Jersey City, was transported by Emergency Medical Services to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 4:20 a.m.

A second defendant in the case, Anthony King, 35, of Jersey City, was arrested by the United States Marshals Service Eastern District of North Carolina Regional Fugitive Task Force on Thursday, January 13, 2022. King is charged with Murder in violation of N.J.S.A 2C:11-3a, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon in violation of N.J.S.A 2C:39-5b, and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose in violation of N.J.S.A 2C:39-4a. He is currently detained at the Hudson County Correctional Facility.

The above charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. R.P.C.3.6(b)(6)
