One Arrested, One Wanted In Jersey City Homicide


ONE ARRESTED, ONE WANTED IN JERSEY CITY HOMICIDE

Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez has released the following information:

On March 28, 2017, at approximately 11:45 a.m., Jersey City Police Officers responded to the area of Garfield Avenue and Union Street in Jersey City on a report of shots fired. Officers then responded to Jersey City Medical Center after being notified of the arrival of a gunshot victim.

The victim, DaJour Riley, age 19, of Jersey City, was shot multiple times inside a vehicle at the intersection of Garfield Avenue and Union Street. He was transported privately to Jersey City Medical Center. Riley was pronounced dead at the hospital at approximately 2:30 p.m.

One arrest has been made in connection with the fatal shooting. Vernell Mohammed, age 19, of Jersey City was arrested and charged with Murder in violation of N.J.S. 2C:11-3, a first-degree crime; Conspiracy to Commit Murder in violation of N.J.S. 2C: 5-2 and N.J.S. 2C: 11-3, a first-degree crime; Possession of a Firearm for an Unlawful Purpose in violation of N.J.S. 2C:39-4, a second degree crime; and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm in violation of N.J.S. 2C:39-5, a second degree crime.

A second suspect is currently wanted in connection with the fatality. Dashawn Mixson, age 20, of Jersey City, has been charged with Murder in violation of N.J.S. 2C:11-3, a first-degree crime; Conspiracy To Commit Murder in violation of N.J.S. 2C: 5-2 and N.J.S. 2C: 11-3, a first-degree crime; Possession of a Firearm for an Unlawful Purpose in violation of N.J.S. 2C:39-4, a second degree crime; and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm in violation of N.J.S. 2C:39-5, a second degree crime. Mixson should not be approached and he should be considered armed and dangerous.
