Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez has released the following information:

On June 20, 2017, at approximately 6:00 p.m., detectives of the Prosecutor’s Homicide Unit arrested Shaquan Hyppolite, age 18, of Jersey City, in connection with the shooting death of Terrel Smith. Smith was the fatal victim of multiple gunshots on March 29, 2017 on Van Horne Street in Jersey City.

Hyppolite has been charged with Murder in violation of N.J.S. 2C:11-3, a first-degree crime; Possession of a Firearm for an Unlawful Purpose in violation of N.J.S. 2C:39-4, a second degree crime; and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm in violation of N.J.S. 2C:39-5, a second degree crime. Hyppolite made his first court appearance today in Criminal Justice Reform Court.

On March 29, 2017, at approximately 5:40 p.m., Jersey City Police Officers were dispatched to the area of 360-2 Van Horne Street in Jersey City on a 911 call reporting possible gunshots. Upon arrival, officers found an unresponsive male victim in a parking lot behind that location.

The victim, later identified as Smith, age 27, of Jersey City, had apparent multiple gunshot wounds to the midsection of his body. He was transported to Jersey City Medical Center by ambulance where he was pronounced dead at approximately 6:05 p.m. A medical examiner has determined the cause of Smith’s death to be multiple gunshot wounds and the manner of death to be homicide.

Prosecutor Suarez credited Hyppolite’s arrest to members of the Prosecutor’s Homicide Unit with assistance from the Jersey City Police Department.
