JURY FINDS UNION CITY MAN GUILTY IN AGGRAVATED SEXUAL ASSAULT

On Wednesday, September 26, 2018, Victor Alvarez, age 27, of Union City, was convicted by a Hudson County jury of Aggravated Sexual Assault, a first-degree crime, after a four-day trial.

The jury found Alvarez guilty of sexually assaulting the victim while she was unconscious on September 11, 2017, in West New York. The victim and the defendant had been in an on-again, off-again dating relationship.

The jury deliberated approximately seven hours before returning their decision of guilty on the Aggravated Sexual Assault count. Alvarez was acquitted of one count of second-degree Sexual Assault by Force or Coercion and a lesser included offense of Criminal Sexual Contact. He faces up to 20 years in state prison and will have to serve 85 percent of any sentence imposed without the possibility of parole.

The convictions will subject the defendant to registration under Megan’s Law and Parole Supervision for Life.

The Honorable Sheila Venable, J.S.C. presided over the trial. Judge Venable is scheduled to sentence the defendant on December 7, 2018. After the verdict, Judge Venable ordered the defendant detained pending sentencing.

The State was represented by Assistant Prosecutor Barbara Drasheff.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit investigated the case.
