JERSEY CITY MAN ARRESTED IN BIDWELL AVENUE HOMICIDE

Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez has released the following information:

On Friday, June 29, 2018, Tavon Rush, age 35, of Jersey City, was arrested without incident on Grant Avenue in Jersey City by members of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and Jersey City Police Department in connection with the death of Darrell Rush on June 26, 2018. Tavon Rush and Darrell Rush are believed to be related as cousins.

Rush has been charged with Aggravated Manslaughter in violation of N.J.S. 2C:11-4, a first-degree crime; Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose in violation of N.J.S. 2C:39-4, a second-degree crime; and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon in violation of N.J.S. 2C:39-5, a second-degree crime; and Certain Persons Not to Possess a Weapon in violation of N.J.S. 2C:39-7, a second-degree crime.

Rush is tentatively scheduled to make his first appearance tomorrow, June 30, 2018, in Criminal Justice Reform Court in the Hudson County Administration Building located at 595 Newark Avenue in Jersey City.

On June 26, at approximately 11:25 p.m., the Jersey City Police Department received a report of gunshots in the area of Martin Luther King Drive and Bidwell Avenue in Jersey City. Upon arrival, responding Police Officers found a male victim in the street near 199 Bidwell Avenue.

The victim was later identified as Darrell Rush, age 31, of Jersey City. He was found in a lifeless condition with an apparent gunshot wound to his head. Rush was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 11:40 p.m.

The Regional Medical Examiner’s Office has declared the Cause of Death to be a gunshot wound to the head and the Manner of Death to be Homicide.

The above charges are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. R.P.C.3.6(b)(6).
