HCPO Investigating Officer Involved Shooting in Kearny


HUDSON COUNTY PROSECUTOR’S OFFICE INVESTIGATING OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING IN KEARNY

Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez has released the following information:

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating an Officer Involved Shooting that occurred Tuesday evening in the area of Bergen and Passaic Avenues in Kearny.

On Tuesday, September 29, 2020, shortly before 8:00 p.m., an officer with the Kearny Police Department observed a vehicle reported stolen – a White Hyundai Sante Fe with Florida plates – traveling south on Passaic Avenue. Police attempted to stop the vehicle, at which time the driver reversed and then drove toward the officer before fleeing the scene. One officer discharged his weapon during the incident.

The vehicle was recovered a short time after having crashed with a tractor trailer cab in Newark. The driver has not been located or come forward at this time.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. As is standard protocol, the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office has been notified and the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office is working in conjunction with the State Attorney General.
