DRIVER ARRESTED AND CHARGED IN JERSEY CITY FATAL CRASH
Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez released the following information:
On Sunday, January 28, 2018, shortly after 12:00 p.m., the driver involved in the fatal crash that occurred on Saturday in the area of Newark Avenue and 7th Street in Jersey City surrendered without incident to detectives of the Hudson County Regional Fatal Collision Unit. She was accompanied by her attorney.
The driver, Khadija Hamilton, age 27, of Jersey City, has been charged with Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Death, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:11-5.1; Death by Auto in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:11-5; and Driving Unlicensed and Causing Death in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:40-22.
The fatal crash occurred early Saturday morning. Responding Jersey City Police Officers found a female victim in the backseat of the crashed 2000 Honda Accord. The victim was identified as Khalla Nguyen, age 24, of Jersey City. She was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 3:30 a.m.
The initial investigation showed that the car was traveling east on Newark Avenue when it made contact with a metal guardrail. The car came to a stop in the middle of Newark Avenue, near 7th Street.
The Hudson County Regional Fatal Collision Unit is continuing to investigate this incident. The above charges are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. R.P.C.3.6(b)(6).
