COLLISION UNIT INVESTIGATING CRASH THAT SERIOUSLY INJURED THREE INDIVIDUALS

Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez has released the following information:

The Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit and the Weehawken Police Department are investigating a motor vehicle crash that seriously injured three individuals on Friday, July 5, 2024.

At approximately 9:50 p.m., the Weehawken Police Department was notified of a collision in the area of Avenue at Port Imperial and Port Imperial Boulevard. Responding officers located a Honda CRV that had been struck by a Ford F350. After striking the Honda, the driver of the Ford fled the scene, striking two pedestrians, a 78-year-old North Bergen female and a 70-year-old female from Florida. After striking the pedestrians, the driver exited the vehicle and fled the scene on foot. The two pedestrians and a passenger of the Honda, an 80-year-old North Bergen female, were seriously injured and transported to Jersey City Medical Center for treatment. Four other occupants of the Honda suffered minor injuries.

During the preliminary investigation, the Weehawken Police Department identified the driver of the Ford as Luis Tubac-Socoy, 25, of Passaic. He was arrested by the Weehawken Police Department and charged with three counts of Assault by Auto in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1c(2), two counts of Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Collison Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1.1, one count of Aggravated Assault in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1b, and issued multiple motor vehicle summonses.

This matter is under investigation by the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit and the Weehawken Police Department. Prosecutor Suarez credited the Weehawken Police Department with the arrest. The above charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. R.P.C.3.6(b)(6)
