Driver Charged in Hoboken Hit and Run that Injured Cyclist


DRIVER ARRESTED IN HOBOKEN HIT AND RUN THAT SERIOUSLY INJURED 24-YEAR-OLD CYCLIST

Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez has released the following information:

A Jersey City man has been arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing serious bodily injury for his involvement in a crash early Monday morning in Hoboken that injured a 24-year-old cyclist.

On Wednesday, September 30, 2020, at approximately 10 a.m., Ryan Varrone, 32, turned himself in to detectives with the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit. Varrone was charged with Leaving the Scene of an Accident Causing Serious Bodily Injury in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1.1, a crime of the third degree, and Endangering an Injured Victim in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1.2, a crime of the third degree.

Varrone was also charged with the following Title 39 Motor Vehicle violations: Failure to Stop in violation of 39:4-144, Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Accident in violation of 39:4-129a, Failure to Obey Signal in violation of 39:4-81, and Improper Safety Glass in violation of 39:3-75.

On Monday, September 28, 2020, members of the Hoboken Police Department responded to the area of Garden Street and First Street at approximately 12:50 a.m. on reports of a pedestrian struck. When they arrived, they found the victim, a New Hampshire man, had been struck while riding a bicycle on Garden Street with two friends. As a result of his injuries, the victim was transported to the Jersey City Medical Center for treatment.

According to the initial investigation, Varrone – an agent with the U.S. Division of Homeland Security who was off duty at the time – initially stopped, but then left the scene.

Prosecutor Suarez credited the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Regional Collision Investigation Unit and the Hoboken Police Department for the investigation and arrest.

The above charge(s) are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. R.P.C.3.6(b)(6).
