Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez has released the following information:

The Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit has filed additional charges against a driver involved in a motor vehicle crash that occurred in Weehawken on Friday, July 5, 2024.

Luis Tubac-Socoy, 25, of Passaic, is charged with three counts of Aggravated Assault in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1b(1); eight counts of Endangering an Injured Victim in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1.2a; Causing Serious Injury While Driving Unlicensed in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:40-22b; and five counts of Assault by Auto in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1c(2). He was arrested on Monday, July 15, 2024, at the Hudson County Correctional Facility where he has been detained since the collision.

At approximately 9:50 p.m. on July 5, 2024, the Weehawken Police Department was notified of a collision in the area of Avenue at Port Imperial and Port Imperial Boulevard. Responding officers located a damaged Honda CRV near Port Imperial Boulevard and Henley Place. Officers found the Honda had been struck by a Ford F350. After striking the Honda, the driver of the Ford fled the scene, striking three pedestrians a short distance away. The driver drove from the second collision scene, later exiting the vehicle and fleeing on foot.

Two of the pedestrians, a 78-year-old North Bergen female and a 70-year-old female from Florida, as well as one passenger of the Honda, an 80-year-old North Bergen female, were seriously injured. The third pedestrian and four other occupants of the Honda suffered minor injuries.

The Weehawken Police Department identified the driver of the Ford as Tubac-Socoy during the preliminary investigation. He was arrested and charged with three counts of Assault by Auto in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1c(2), two counts of Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Collison Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1.1, one count of Aggravated Assault in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1b, and issued multiple motor vehicle summonses.

Prosecutor Suarez credited the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit and the Weehawken Police Department with the arrest and investigation. The above charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. R.P.C.3.6(b)(6)
